Smart phones are proving to be the bane of airliners everywhere.

A New Jersey family says they were kicked off a JetBlue flight to Las Vegas over a birthday cake.

The airline tells a different story, saying it was more about behavior.

“The customers became agitated, cursed and yelled at the crew, and made false accusations about a crewmember’s fitness to fly,” JetBlue claimed in a statement, according to WABC-TV.

Minta Burke’s husband, Cameron, booked the flight celebrate her 40th birthday and the family brought a birthday cake with them, storing it in a overhead bin… at least until a flight attendant took issue with that, WABC-TV reported.

“We were just so happy,” Minta said. “Couldn’t wait to get to Las Vegas, and all of a sudden this occurred, and my two children are screaming, crying. They’re confused not knowing what’s going on – they were traumatized.”

Cameron put the cake under a seat after being told the cake could not be stored in the bin, but the situation escalated when a second flight attendant got involved, berating the first flight attendant.

“You know, you could see the gestures – then she was pointing to her, ‘Did you tell him he couldn’t put anything in the overhead compartment?'” Cameron explained. “I had approached them, and I said everything was fine, and she said, ‘Sir, this does not involve you.'”

The flight attendant allegedly told him he was being non-compliant.

“Then I said, ‘Ma’am, had you been drinking?'” Cameron added. “Because her behavior was not normal.”

Police were eventually called and even though an officer is overheard saying “nobody did anything wrong,” all passengers were deplaned. The Burke’s receiving a refund for their tickets.

“It’s just crazy. I’m surprised. I’m surprised,” Minta said. “I thought highly of JetBlue before.”
