It was a joke — get over it. It was also true.
“Variety” announced the names of honorees at its “Power of Women” luncheon held in New York City Friday. For some unstated reason, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton was one of those being honored.
Comedienne and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Vanessa Bayer injected a bit of humor in the otherwise droll event by making fun of Clinton’s mother, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
“OK, we have some pretty amazing honorees this afternoon,” Bayer told the gathering. “Jessica Chastain, Gayle King, Blake Lively, yep! Audra McDonald, Tina Knowles, Shari Redstone, and Chelsea Clinton.”
Then came the punch line.
“And, they all have one thing in common,” she continued. “None of their moms are president.”
Hilarious, right? Not to the attendees, comprised of New York liberals.
When the former first daughter took the podium, she gave Bayer a personal message — and a piece of her mind.
“Uh, Vanessa, we may be able to say in this room today that no one’s mother is currently president, but someday, someone’s will be,” Clinton replied. “Thank you very much,” she said as she left the dais to thunderous applause.
Maybe it’s not just Clinton who lacks a sense of humor — maybe all liberals do.
Noticeably missing from the list of honorees was the name Ivanka Trump, who, unlike Chelsea Clinton, actually has accomplished something on her own in her young life.
