It’s no wonder the Democratic Party has been taking hits — its leadership can’t even agree on the party’s core principles.
This was brought into crystal clarity Sunday when House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin took opposite stances on the issue of abortion.
But the real problem stems from Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez, who mucked things up for his party by saying that Democrats must be for abortion rights to be included in the fold. That doesn’t sound like much of a choice!
“Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body and her health,” Perez said in a statement. “That is not negotiable and should not change city by city or state by state.”

Perez’s statement took the abortion issue well-beyond “pro-choice” and into the realm of “pro-abortion” — thus removing “choice” from the equation altogether.

Choice apparently went out the window. You’re either pro-abortion or you’re outta here.
Durbin, who represents Illinois, told CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union” that there’s no room in the Democratic Party for pro-lifers.
“I am committed to women’s rights under the law, reproductive rights certainly, and our party is,” Durbin told Bash. “We’ve made that part of our platform and position for a long, long time. I know within the ranks of the Democratic Party there are those who see that differently on a personal basis, but when it comes to the policy position, I think we need to be clear and unequivocal.
Here’s a clip of Durbin’s CNN appearance.
Well, maybe not so “clear and unequivocal” to Pelosi, who represents a House district in the San Francisco Bay area.
She told NBC’s Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” Sunday that “of course” pro-lifers have a home within the Democratic Party.
“Can you be a Democrat and [have] the support of the Democratic Party, if you’re pro-life?” Todd asked.
“Of course,” Pelosi answered. “I have served many years in Congress with members who have not shared my very positive, my family would say aggressive, position on promoting a woman’s right to choose.”
Here’s a clip of Pelosi’s NBC News appearance.
The issue cropped up last week when Omaha, Nebraska mayoral candidate Heath Mello, a Democrat, announced that he was pro-life.
Just to muddy up the waters further, Sen. Bernie Sanders, who’s not a Democrat but ran as one in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary, stated that Mello’s pro-life position would be fine within the Democratic ranks.
Perez , however, sided with Durbin on the issue — if you’re going to call yourself a Democrat you’d better support the principles of a woman’s right to obtain an abortion (or lack of principles, as some would say).
Oddly enough, both Sanders and Perez made their opposing statement while on the Democratic Party’s “Come Together and Fight Back” tour. Sounds as though it’s more “fight” than it was a chance to “come together.”
Because the abortion brouhaha occurred last week, both Durbin and Pelosi should have been prepared with a cohesive policy statement. Instead, they each ran off in different directions.
