Katie Pavlich raises eyebrows with take on why Nunes stepped away from Russian probe

It wasn’t a problem with his ethics; he was forced out by Democratic lawmakers.

Thursday morning’s big news story was House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes’ decision to temporarily step down from his committee’s probe of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The California lawmaker said his decision was based on “entirely false and politically motivated” charges directed at him by “leftwing activist groups.”

But what prompted the “leftwing activist groups” to file charges against him with the Office of Congressional Ethics? Townhall editor Katie Pavlich had a suspicion.

“This to me looks like Democrats on the Hill … went to these leftwing groups that Nunes cites in his statement,” she said.

Pavlich observed that Nunes refused to step aside when “[Sen.] Chuck Schumer called for his resignation [and] [Rep.] Nancy Pelosi called for his resignation.”

It appeared obvious what happened after that.

“It looks to me like some Democrat from the Hill got in touch with these groups and said ‘Why don’t you file this ethics complaint that would force him to step aside.’”

American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp observed that the ethics complaint came fast on the heels of former National Security Adviser Susan Rice’s contradictory statements on her role in “unmasking” American citizens in surveillance reports.

Schlapp remarked earlier in the segment that the Office of Congressional Ethics, initiated by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, had been used primarily for partisan political purposes by the Democratic Party.

Left cheers Nunes ‘stepping down’ from Russian probe; the Right laughs when they hear who’s ‘stepping in’

Any celebration the left engaged in was short-lived: As Nunes stepped aside, Rep. Trey Gowdy stepped into the committee.
