‘Easy for white men like us’: Tucker relentlessly exposes mayor’s insane argument for sanctuary cities

While conservatives argue facts and figures, liberals rely on race and gender.

Lansing, Michigan Mayor Virgil Bernero told Fox News host Tucker Carlson that while it’s never OK for municipal governments to ignore federal law, he claimed his city that just claimed “sanctuary city” status complied with federal law.

Bernero added, however, that he can’t comply with Immigration and Naturalization Enforcement without federalizing his city’s police officers.

That clearly didn’t wash and Carlson corrected the mayor.

“They’re not asking you … to federalize,” he said. They’re asking you “to not subvert federal law and I don’t think, legally, it’s your prerogative to do that.”

Carlson added that cities can’t pick and choose what federal laws they’re going to follow, such as child pornography or firearm possession.

“You don’t get to do that,” he said. “You don’t get to write the federal laws — you’re subject to them,” he said.

Bernero claimed that although the city of Lansing has a good working relationship with federal agencies, “even ICE,” he added, “We’re not immigration officers” and that “I don’t believe” the city will suffer a loss in federal funding for non-compliance with federal law.

“And I’m telling you I’m willing to fight them!” he said with finality.

Carlson countered, “If your job is to protect the city … why would you risk [funding loss] except to make a fashionable … statement?” he asked.

The mayor claimed that building community relationships was what kept his people safe — “building bridges, not walls.”

When Carlson asked how ignoring federal immigration law could keep his city safer, Bernero claimed that complying with ICE would make his officers an “occupying force.”

The mayor said it was “easy” for Carlson to dispute that claim because it was “white men like us who are in the majority.”

“Try to walk in another man’s shoes,” Bernero said.

At that point, Tucker really let Bernero have it telling him he could no longer take him seriously and even accused him of “bafoonery.”

“I thought you believed in laws,” Carlson shot back. “Now you’re making racial generalizations?”

More than one viewer questioned the mayor’s sanity.

At the very end of the interview, Bernero asked Carlson if he ever got “pulled over for driving while white.”

“Now you’re getting into completely crazy talk,” Carlson replied.
