Only in liberal America can a hijab, a traditional head covering depicting submission to male authority, be cast as a symbol of resistance and feminism.
…courtesy of President Donald Trump, of course.
Talk about a spin zone, USA Today arrived at that far-reaching conclusion in a recent piece commemorating #MuslimWomensDay, oddly passing on the opportunity to sell female mutilation in a similar light.

Since the election of Trump, the hijab has emerged as a new symbol of resistance and feminism. https://t.co/7CmTAD0KG4 #MuslimWomensDay

“I do believe hijab support feminism,” Sameeha Ahmad said outside a Muslim prayer center at the University of Maryland. “The way you look at it from a religious perspective, it empowers you by strengthening your relationship with God. It’s a step you are taking to further yourself within your own religion.”
The online piece featured a video of several young Muslim girls explaining why they wear a hijab:
“Scores” of non-Muslims have joined in on the hijab wearing craze to show solidarity with Muslims and defy Trump, USA Today reported.
The reaction on social media included plenty of snark, but one user nailed it with this message to USA Today: “This is so laughable you should be embarrassed.”
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
@USATODAY This is so laughable you should be embarrassed.

@USATODAY Yay! Let’s celebrate an instrument of oppression. So empowered…like slaves celebrating their shackles. #muslimwomensday

@USATODAY These women might as well wear t-shirts saying “I really don’t understand feminism but I want to get an abortion if needed”

.@USATODAY Fail. Hijab is symbol of oppression, not feminism. Hijab is symbol of submission, not resistance. Stop trying to bend reality.

@NoMoreClintons @commonsense765 Muslim women feel oppressed by greatest democracy in the world?Perhaps all that will change with sharia law.
