CNN takes major beating for so-called ‘bombshell’ on heels of new Trump surveillance report

CNN appeared to take some the wind out of the sails of an announcement late Wednesday afternoon that some messages from members of the Donald Trump transition team, possibly including Trump himself, had been intercepted and released to other agencies and may have been leaked with their names unmasked.

That evening, however, CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” announced its own exclusive “breaking” report, that it had information suggesting that Trump associates had coordinated with Russian operatives to release information damaging to the Hillary Clinton campaign.

However, CNN’s “breaking” story was based on anonymous sources and only suggested that Trump associates “may have coordinated” with Russian operatives.

CNN reported:

One law enforcement official said the information in hand suggests “people connected to the campaign were in contact and it appeared they were giving the thumbs up to release information when it was ready.” But other U.S. officials who spoke to CNN say it’s premature to draw that inference from the information gathered so far since it’s largely circumstantial.

The FBI cannot yet prove that collusion took place, but the information suggesting collusion is now a large focus of the investigation, the officials said.

That’s a lot of qualifiers for a “breaking” story.

Nonetheless, Democrats were elated, beginning with Democratic operative Zac Petkanas, the Trump war room director.

He’s waited so long to hear qualifiers like “suggests” and “may have” from anonymous sources? Petkanas obviously sets his sights way too low.

If his name sounds familiar, it’s because late last month Fox News host Tucker Carlson turned him into a stuttering mess when Petkanas advocated for transgender bathroom decrees like that pushed by former President Obama.

Others called it for what it was — a big fat nothing burger.

And then there was the anonymous source itself — reportedly associated with the FBI, which doesn’t have the greatest track record.

One wondered if CNN had an obsession with finding more and more ways to trash Trump.
