A hero security guard is relieved to learn he won’t be charged after shooting an armed bank robber dead.
Brian Harrison, a retired deputy with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department in Illinois, shot serial robber Laurence Turner dead after he charged into Alpine Bank in Rockford, Illinois, on January 20.
Security footage caught the entire incident on video (see below), where Turner barges into the bank wearing a ski mask while brandishing a gun.
Security guard Brian Harrison whipped out his gun and shot the robber dead when he saw the perp was waving a gun around.
The attempted robbery occurred while three bank employees were duty. No one was hurt during the terrifying incident.
Afterward, Harrison was placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
Winnebago County State Attorney Joe Bruscato said no charges will be brought against Harrison because he had acted in self-defense and in the defense of others, the Rockford Register Star reported.
Police said Laurence Turner had stolen his mother’s car the morning of the robbery. He had committed three other armed robberies during the past three months, including a local jewelry store and two other banks.
An autopsy revealed that Turner, 34, had opiates and other drugs in his system.
In a letter to the Rockford Register Star, Alpine Bank thanked the security guard for protecting its workers: “[Mr. Harrison] acted with courage and quickness to protect our family. You are a hero to each and every one of us.”
Brian Harrison, who had been on administrative leave since the incident, is now back on duty.
