Former director of national intelligence and Obama appointee James Clapper took to the Sunday morning airwaves to weigh in on President Trump’s allegation of wiretapping on the part of Clapper’s former boss.
On NBC’s Meet the Press, Clapper claimed “For the part of the national security apparatus that I oversaw as DNI, there was no such wiretap activity mounted against the president-elect at the time, as a candidate, or against his campaign.”

Clapper also told host Chuck Todd that he could have denied a request for a wiretap as head of the US intelligence community. In other words, he was in a prime place to know.
But, as Twitchy notes, Clapper hasn’t always been the source of indisputable information, and plenty of reputable folks were willing to point this out on social media.
Clapper cannot be the final word on any of this – lied to Congress, downplayed Iran threat assessment, misled about bin Laden documents.

Clapper says no wiretapping of Trump Tower. That may be true. But here is another thing Clapper said about surveillance. Under oath. pic.twitter.com/KYBaPotqtV

Shouldn't Democrats get someone more credible than James Clapper to make these denials? Like any randomly chosen person.

However, there was another nugget in the Clapper interview that bears mention. Although Clapper welcomed a broader investigation into Russia’s actions, he saw zero evidence that anyone in the Trump campaign illegally conspired with Russian agents to influence the election.
“We did not include any evidence in our report — and I say, ‘our,’ that’s N.S.A., F.B.I. and C.I.A., with my office, the Director of National Intelligence — that had anything, that had any reflection of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians,” Clapper said. “There was no evidence of that included in our report.”
Why question Clapper before but believe him here? Well, as a partisan Obama appointee, does anyone truly think Clapper would have held back if he HAD found evidence of that nature?
