In a speech for the ages, one moment stood above all others.
In hindsight, most pundits will likely agree that this was by far the most powerful speech President Trump has delivered to date. It covered a wide range of topics related to Trump’s vision for America, and it did so with a rhetorical flourish and a lack of the fight and controversy that has seemed to define political discourse on all sides these days.
Trump’s speech had lots of great moments, but by far the most movingly visceral came when the president acknowledged the supreme sacrifice of Ryan Owens, the Navy SEAL killed in the recent Yemen raid, and his widow, Carryn Owens. By doing so, Trump gave voice to the sacrifices of all other slain service members and elevated their status to where it has long belonged.
Truly, the moment Trump said his “legacy is etched into eternity” and the crowd rose and applauded the tearful widow, it was hard to imagine a dry eye in America.

Military widow is overcome here, and it's genuinely hard to watch but it's very real & raw.

The section was marked by no less than three standing ovations. Here are Trump’s words, as he reaffirmed the fact that indeed Owens’ sacrifice wasn’t in vain:
We are blessed to be joined tonight by Carryn Owens, the widow of U.S. Navy Special Operator, Senior Chief William “Ryan” Owens. Ryan died as he lived, a warrior, and a hero — battling against terrorism and securing our Nation. [applause]
I just spoke to General Mattis, who reconfirmed that, and I quote, “Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies.” Ryan’s legacy is etched into eternity, thank you. [applause] For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom — we will never forget him. [applause]
To those allies who wonder what kind of friend America will be, look no further than the heroes who wear our uniform.
When Trump’s address was over, the two met in the hall where Press Secretary Sean Spicer captured a moment where he said Trump embraced Owens:
