President Donald Trump may not realize it yet but he could end up being a major player in this year’s Oscars.
The 89th Academy Awards have not been cancelled to protest the election but may feel the effects of the changes in Washington, D.C. in presenting this year’s awards.
Will the political climate deprive ‘La La Land’ of the best picture Oscar? https://t.co/cUR8Asxtkn via @latimesopinion pic.twitter.com/UdzlbBwJMF

“Will issue-oriented movies trump eye candy at this year’s Oscars as Hollywood seeks to send a message that it won’t stand for fear-driven legislation meant to rob minorities of their rights?” Glenn Lovell asked in Monday’s Los Angeles Times.
McConnell SHUTS UP, reprimands Elizabeth Warren on Senate floor- and boy did she have it coming!
@latimes @latimesopinion “deprive??” What a jerky headline

With 14 nominations, the musical “La La Land” was a natural to win the best picture award. But, Academy members will “want their votes to matter,” Lovell suggests, by choosing “real-life issues over sentiment or institutionalized nostalgia” in their voting.
“In the current volatile political climate, they won’t want to appear self-congratulatory or out of touch,” Lovell wrote, noting that the feel-good musical starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling will suffer under the move to make a political statement.
@latimes @latimesopinion The young white male perspective is something really lacking in popular culture and deserves credit. #opposite

Films like “Fences” or “Moonlight,” which takes on the issues of racism and homophobia, seem to be the top contenders for the best picture honor. Unfortunately for “La La Land,” that top honor would appear as “show biz honoring show biz and, therefore, more than a little narcissistic,” according to Lovell.
.@latimes @latimesopinion So, LA opinion is that film about LA is “entitled” to Oscar?

In another telling sign, Academy voters nominated Meryl Streep in the best actress category for her role as a tone-deaf philanthropist “Florence Foster Jenkins.” But it was probably Streep’s performance at the Golden Globe Awards attacking Trump – and his counter-attack on Twitter – that scored her the nomination.
“By attacking Streep, Trump may well have helped Streep to a record 20th Oscar nomination. (Nomination voting closed five days after the Golden Globes.) The president’s subsequent attacks on everything the movie industry holds dear could have a similar call-to-arms effect, mobilizing Academy membership,” Lovell noted.
But it seems Hollywood, again, is lost in its own self-important world. Apparently, many Twitter users were not losing sleep over how the political fallout will affect the upcoming Oscars, scheduled to air on Feb. 26.

.@latimes @latimesopinion I’m hoping that the fact that there were better movies released in 2016 will deprive ‘La La Land’ of that award.

@latimes @latimesopinion Only reason not it won’t get award is because it was a boring, terrible movie. Bad music, singing and dancing. Ugh.

@latimes @latimesopinion Ummm…the fact that there are better movies than ‘La La Land’ will be what deprives it of winning best picture ???
