Rumblings Sheriff Clarke might run for Senate has folks fired up, super PAC underway to make it happen

Will he or won’t he?

Fans and supporters of Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke think the tough-talking lawman should be running for a higher office.

A “Breaking News” tweet on Monday even announced Clarke’s supposed plan to challenge Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin for the Senate seat in Wisconsin in 2018 – even though the sheriff is not running.

A campaign has been launched by fans of the sheriff, with a super PAC calling on Clarke to run, according to Newsmax. The group started a website and a Facebook page to encourage the cowboy-hat wearing sheriff to run, but he is not affiliated with either.

In fact, Clarke has not responded to any of the efforts and turned down interview requests, Newsmax reported. A political adviser told ABC WISN-12 before President Donald Trump’s inauguration that Clarke had seen the website and was “humbled” by the support.

The movement to draft the Trump-supporting sheriff was started by an advisory board of nine people which includes former lawmaker and reality TV star Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman, WISN reported. The committee’s website calls Clarke “The Black Rush Limbaugh with a Badge.”

“For 38 years you have answered duty’s call as an exemplary law enforcement professional,” reads part of the online petition urging Clarke to run. “Duty now summons you to a different calling: to save the United States Senate.”

The conservative firebrand’s current term as Milwaukee County Sheriff ends in the summer of 2018 and the deadline to appear on the 2018 Senate ballot is June 1, 2018.

Many feel Clarke, who spoke at the Republican National Convention last summer and was part of Trump’s transition team, would be a valuable asset to the administration. Speculation that he would be tapped for a Cabinet position by Trump did not materialize and fans are hoping the Senate seat will allow Clarke to support Trump from the legislative branch.

Despite no official word from the sheriff, Twitter users were thrilled with the “news” that he could be running.
