‘Bloody Thursday’: Here’s how Ronald Reagan dealt with UC Berkeley snowflakes who tried to riot in 1969

You’ve got to give him credit – Ronald Reagan knew how to deal with snowflakes.

Not surprisingly, The University of California, Berkeley has seen more than its fair share of libs-gone-wild political demonstrations, in its history. In fact, almost 50 years before lefties managed to make their campus “safe” from the likes of Milo Yiannopoulos by sowing anarchy, chaos, and destruction, their Bolshevik forbears took on none other than conservative icon and former California Governor Ronald Reagan.

In 1969, UC Berkeley students were triggered when People’s Park, a small community park near the college, was slated to be turned into a parking lot.

Because students had threatened to literally destroy the university if the project went forward, Reagan ordered Berkeley Police and the California Highway Patrol to the school with instructions to use “whatever methods they choose” to deal with the rioters.

The confrontation, known as “Bloody Thursday,” featured tear gas and buckshot used against protesters, resulting in one student killed and 128 more hospitalized. Governor Reagan declared a state of emergency, banning public assembly for two weeks and sending the National Guard to keep the peace.

In a later press conference, Reagan was asked if he considered negotiating. “What is to negotiate?” Reagan asked. “All of it began the first time some of you who know better, and are old enough to know better, let young people think that they had the right to choose the laws they would obey as long as they were doing it in the name of social protest.”
