Hameed Darweesh, who worked as a translator for the United States Army in Iraq, was detained Friday at JFK Airport in New York and released on Saturday.

His detainment followed President Trump’s executive order to institute extreme vetting measures against travelers from several Middle East nations.

After Darweesh was released, he spoke to reporters who were likely expecting some hard feelings toward Trump.

“I want to thank the people that took care of me and they support me,” he said.

“This is the humanity. This is the soul of America,” Darweesh said. “This is what pushed me to leave my country to move here,” he said. “I’m very, very thankful to the people who came to support me.”

“America is the greatest nation, the greatest people in the world,” he added.

But when a reporter asked him what he had to say to President Donald Trump, likely expecting a vitriolic response, they got a surprise.

“I like him,” Darweesh said, after the people who spoke before him trashed the president and his policy. “This is a policy, I don’t know. He is a president and I’m a normal person.”
