Meryl Streep’s wild anti-Trump rant leads to Golden Globes most awkward moment, as camera pans to Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn

After a poignant montage highlighting her long and brilliant career, liberal Hollywood actress Meryl Streep managed to turn her acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille award at Sunday night’s Golden Globes into a long and rambling political rant.

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if you kick us all out, you’ll have nothing to watch except for football and mixed martial arts, which are not arts,” Streep said, as if she somehow believes Donald Trump intends to kick out foreigners just for being from somewhere else.

Streep also brought out the overused and debunked accusation that Trump “made fun” of a disabled reporter, calling it the “performance” that most stood out. “There was nothing good about it, but it did its job,” Streep said. “It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out my head because it wasn’t in a movie, it was in real life. That instinct to humiliate when it’s modeled by someone in a public platform, it filters down into everyone’s life because it gives permission for others to do the same. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.”

100% ‘proof’ Donald Trump did NOT mock a reporter with a disability

Just moments after her rant, Conservative commentator and radio host Larry Elder refuted Streep with the facts on Trump’s alleged “mocking,” as reported by BizPac Review. See the story in the tweet below.

Streep went on and on, but remarkably the moderators didn’t cue any music (or a cartoon shepherd’s hook, or something, anything) although they did for many other award recipients who managed to go over the strict time limits.

The Trump jabs continued as Streep managed to somehow link Trump’s questioning of President Obama’s birth certificate to the fact that other actors are from places other than Los Angeles. “But who are we, and what is Hollywood anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places,” Streep said, referring to her New Jersey upbringing and the fact that other actors, including Sarah Paulson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy Adams, etc. aren’t from Los Angeles. “Where are their birth certificates?” Streep asked.

But perhaps the oddest moment of Streep’s rant, and probably the entire Golden Globes ceremony, was when the camera cut to conservatives Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn, who doubtless looked like most of America looked that very moment:

Apparently, Gibson and Vaughn weren’t alone in their confusion, as this liberal tweeter noticed:

Just a few minutes after the speech, #MerylStreep was trending second on Twitter right behind #GoldenGlobes. She got lots of support from liberals in need of safety pins, but plenty of pushback as well.

Meryl Streep has a right to an opinion and a voice, of course, but the rest of us have a right to implore the pampered Hollywood snowflake to just “shut up and act!”

It didn’t take long for Trump to respond to the meltdown . . .
