Donald Trump has nominated anti-Russia hawk Dan Coats as director of national intelligence.
Coats, a senator from Indiana from 1989 to 1999, previously served on the Senate Intelligence committee. From 2001 to 2005, he was the US ambassador to Germany under the George W. Bush administration.

In a statement, President-elect Trump praised Coats’ expertise and experience. “Dan has clearly demonstrated the deep subject matter expertise and sound judgment required to lead our intelligence community,” Trump said.
Dan Coats’ nomination came as a surprise to leftist media desperately trying to push the narrative that Trump is a puppet of Russian president Vladimir Putin. Why? Because Coats is a vocal anti-Russia hawk who has aggressively pushed for more sanctions against Putin over his invasion of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea.
In 2014, Coats was banned from Russia as retaliation for the stiff sanctions the U.S. imposed on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.
At the time, Coats joked about his banishment: “While I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to go on vacation with my family in Siberia this summer, I am honored to be on this list.”

Even partisan hacks like former Obama national security spokesman Tommy Vietor are impressed with Coats.
Vietor, a vocal critic of Trump, tweeted: “Dan Coats is a good choice. Serious. Respected.”
