Kellyanne Conway raises eyebrows, wonders if Russian sanctions were meant to ‘box in’ Trump

Kellyanne Conway seemed open to the idea that the Obama administration’s moves against Russia might be designed to “box in” President-elect Donald Trump when he takes office.

Speaking on CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360,” on Thursday the incoming counselor to the next president said the accusations against Russia have reached a “fever pitch” since Trump won the presidential election.

“Even those who are sympathetic to President Obama on most issues are saying that part of the reason he did this today was to quote ‘box in’ President-elect Trump,” she said. “That would be very unfortunate if politics were the motivating factor here, but we can’t help but think that that’s often true.”

Conway said the incoming Trump administration was “not in favor of foreign governments interfering in our elections or interfering in our intelligence but we’re also not in favor of our intelligence interfering with elections after the fact.”

Earlier in the day President Obama gave 35 Russian operatives the boot and closed two Russian facilities while it also sanctioned Russian intelligence services.

But CNN Justice correspondent Evan Perez noted that, because all of it was done by executive order, Trump will be able to “with a stroke of pen simply roll all of this back.”
