President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway fought back accusations about Russia’s alleged involvement in the election on CBS’s “Face The Nation” Sunday morning.
Conway responded to allegations by some officials in the CIA that Russia played a part in the results of the 2016 election early in the interview.
The first question CBS’s John Dickerson asked was blunt: Is Trump planning on dropping his skepticism of the Russia allegations after the electoral college officially votes Monday.
“The entire nonsense about the electors trying to use the Russian hacking issue to change the election results is really unfortunate. I think that actually undermines the democracy more than any other conservation that we are having fight now,” Conway began. “We were really struck by the disagreement from the Obama camp and the Hillary Clinton camp this week.”
“You have Josh Earnest doing remarkable things from the press secretary podium, to be telling us all what Donald Trump obviously knew when he would have no way of knowing that and it’s frankly disrespectful.”
Dickerson then asked Conway if she could provide any evidence that Russia didn’t hack the election, “What does he know that all those other intelligence officers don’t know?”
“John, where’s the evidence? why when CIA officials were brought into a House intelligence briefing last week, did they refuse to go?” Conway asked. “Instead, they decided it was better to talk to the media, that undermines our intelligence operations.”
Dickerson pushed further, asking Conway if other members of Trump’s staff are unwilling to admit that Russia allegedly hacked the election in November, forcing Conway to create a distinction from the hacked Hillary Clinton emails and the actual election process.
“But remember, you just said the word election, I have to push back, cause that’s what everyone is doing, they are conflating whether Russia hacked into the emails, and how it effected the election,” Conway struck back. “I see it in every paragraph of every story, we keep hearing from people who don’t know what they are talking about on TV and frankly are never under oath. We are listening to the White House press secretary make those same accusations.”
“People don’t listen to it,” Conway concluded, adding that several former Clinton supporters approached her to say they were uncomfortable with how the Clinton camp is handling the Russia issue.
Several CIA officials came out independently from the agency to assert they believe Russia was behind the hacks, and the hacks greatly affected the results of the election, a charge Trump and his staff continue to label as “ridiculous.”
