Did Donald Trump punk Mitt Romney?
That’s what former Trump adviser Roger Stone claims. Stone, who is not a member of the Trump transition, says the president-elect had no intention of selecting Romney as Secretary of State.
Moreover, Stone claims Trump only interviewed his former nemesis just to “torture him” as payback for his past criticism, The Hill reported. In an interview on InfoWars, Stone said Trump was just toying with Romney:
Donald Trump was interviewing Mitt Romney for Secretary of State in order to torture him, to toy with him. And given the history, that’s completely understandable.
Mitt Romney crossed a line. He didn’t just oppose Trump, which is his democratic right. He called him ‘a phony and a fraud’ and ‘a con man.’ That’s not the kind of man you want as Secretary of State.”
Trump was barraged with criticism from supporters when news surfaced in November that he was considering Romney for a Cabinet post. Trump loyalists, including senior adviser Kellyanne Conway, vocally expressed their opposition to Romney due to his past vicious remarks.
Trump announced on Twitter that he has chosen ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State.
Romney confirmed on Facebook late Monday that he is out of the running for the Secretary post. Roger Stone, who was ousted from the Trump campaign in August 2015, took delight in fanning rumors that Trump had punked Romney.
He's shouting, "Mitt, there's a mop and pail here with your name on it!"

Meanwhile, the Atlantic’s McKay Coppins said Trump’s transition team denies Stone’s version of events.
