Two teenagers tragically died in a car crash Tuesday while using Facebook Live.
Brooke Miranda Hughes, 18, and Chaniya Morrison-Toomey, 19, were driving on Interstate 380 in eastern Pennsylvania shortly after midnight, according to The Scranton Times-Tribune.
“Are you going live?” Morrison-Toomey asks her friend. The live feed recorded the moments right before a tractor-trailer rammed into the back of the car.
Investigators believe the two teens were traveling very slowly in the right lane using a spare tire doughnut. Pennsylvania state trooper Dave Peters said the wreck caused such bad damage to the vehicle that it was hard to decipher the previous condition, according to The Scranton Times-Tribune.
Michael Jay Parks, the driver of the truck, was reportedly not harmed from the crash.
Samantha Piasecki, 17, a friend of the two victims, was riding in the car Monday night before the crash, but requested to be dropped off at her mother’s home in Scranton. Hughes and Morrison-Toomey asked her to stay.
“I feel like if I went, I could have stopped it somehow,” Piasecki said, reports The Scranton Times-Tribune. “It broke me.”
After the recording went dark for seven minutes following the crash, an unidentifiable person picks up the mobile device.
The video was taken off of Facebook and will be admitted as evidence.
A 20-year-old driver in Rhode Island live streamed himself weaving in and out of traffic on a highway going 115 mph. The man eventually crashed into a garbage truck for his third accident in 2016, and the Facebook Live video is being used as testimony for his arraignment.
