Yuuuge mistake. Hillary Clinton privately acknowledged that she had “stepped in it” when she condemned millions of Donald Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables.”
In September 2016, Clinton slammed Trump supporters as racist, sexist and xenophobic during a fancy fundraiser with liberal donors in New York.
“You can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Clinton said. “Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that and he has lifted them up.”
Of course, the “basket of deplorables” got the last laugh, because they turned out in huge numbers for Trump.
“Afterward, she told one adviser that she knew she had ‘just stepped in it,’” the New York Times reported.
Looking back, Clinton realized she made other fatal election errors, including dismissing rural and working-class white voters.
Sources said Bill Clinton had urged Hillary to campaign for working-class white votes by attending a St. Patrick’s Day event at the University of Notre Dame.
But Hillary refused, saying “white Catholics were not the audience she needed to spend time reaching out to.”
Of course, that arrogance cost her the election, because white Catholics, evangelicals and even the Amish community turned out in huge numbers for Trump.
It’s not surprising that many voting blocs that Clinton took for granted did not show up for her.
Throughout her campaign, Clinton and her staff denounced Bernie Sanders supporters as basement dwellers, mocked Catholics, and reportedly referred to Latinos as “taco bowls,” Wikileaks email dumps showed.
Trump won the election by appealing to the average American.
In his victory speech, Trump vowed to be a president for all Americans, not just the elite:
“Ours was a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds, and beliefs, who want and expect our government to serve the people. And serve the people it will.”
Trump promised: “The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.”
