Republican Congressman Trey Gowdy believes Hillary Clinton has no one but herself to blame for being at the center of a federal investigation.
In a Fox News Channel exclusive, the South Carolina congressman and member of the House Judiciary Committee told Megyn Kelly on “The Kelly File” Friday that FBI Director James Comey’s decision to reopen the investigation into Clinton’s private email server was “extraordinary.”
“Well it’s pretty extraordinary because Secretary Clinton had an extraordinary email arrangement with herself,” Gowdy said. “She is the author of her own destiny. Everything that’s happened since then is the natural, probable consequence of deciding you’re going to have a rogue email system.”
Gowdy, a member of the House Oversight Committee and former chair of the Select Committee on Benghazi, believes Comey did the right thing in announcing the reopening of the investigation but that his letter was “cryptic” as it did not confirm what newly discovered emails contained.
“He hasn’t even confirmed yet that the information is significant,” Gowdy said. Comey told bureau employees in an internal memo that timing and the pending election obligated him to disclose the new probe.
Although Comey could not offer details at this time, any effort by Clinton herself to shed light on the bombshell announcement by the FBI would be welcomed, Gowdy said.
“I understand she’s upset and I understand she doesn’t like the timing” of Comey’s communication, he said of Clinton, “but she need look no further than herself.”
He blasted the Democratic presidential nominee for demanding that the FBI release all the information it has found in the case, knowing that the bureau is legally bound to not disclose anything in an ongoing investigation.
“The same person who went to great lengths to make sure that these emails were private now, all of a sudden, wants it all made public,” Gowdy said. “It’s just too rich.”
