Fox News Channel’s Megyn Kelly was caught off guard by Rupert Murdoch giving an interview about her private contract negotiations.
The host of “The Kelly File” was reportedly “bemused” by the 21st Century Fox executive chairman’s remarks in an interview with one of his own newspapers, a person familiar with Kelly’s side told Variety.
Kelly was surprised by Murdoch’s comments to the Wall Street Journal which she read just before going on air to host Wednesday’s edition of her Fox News show, Variety reported. However, according to the source, the anchor was not angered and the comments wouldn’t influence her decision about whether she remains with Fox News.
The Journal interview, headlined “Megyn Kelly Seeks Salary North of $20 Million in Contract Talks With Fox News,” featured Murdoch stating that though he would not want to lose Kelly, “we have a deep bench of talent, many of whom would give their right arm for her spot.”
Kelly, who is reportedly making $15 million this year according to Variety, is seeking to make more than $20 million when she renegotiates her contract next July.
Meanwhile, the Fox News anchor’s new book, “Settle for More,” is set for a Nov. 15 release and expected to be an automatic best-seller, Variety reported.
While contract negotiations normally happen in private and details are kept secret, Murdoch’s discussion of Kelly’s pending contract expiration and financial specifics put the negotiations squarely in the public eye. Kelly will undoubtedly be asked about her future at Fox when she embarks on a book tour after Election Day.
