Report: DOJ using ‘extortive lawsuits’ to sue big banks and fund liberal organizations, political activism

A new report from the Government Accountability Institute alleges that the Department of Justice of extorting fines from major banking institutions, and using those funds to finance progressive community organization groups.

The GAI, a Florida-based conservative nonprofit investigative research group, released its report Monday, which indicated that while community organization groups have been aggressively using “terrorist” tactics to get financial organizations to give them funds, such groups have found a willing accomplice for this practice in the Obama administration.

The DOJ has been targeting the financial institutions by filing controversial lawsuits. They follow up by offering incentives to settle the cases by financing the progressive groups directly.

The report states:

The old time political machine has been replaced by these nonprofits and a system of patronage now operates with the imprimatur of the DOJ. The DOJ has instituted a system that provides significant funding for nonprofit “community organizers” through a pattern of extortive lawsuits. This system, wherein appointed attorneys can legally extract money from the private sector and redistribute the funds to third-party organizations outside of the appropriations process, shows an unprecedented and extraordinary disregard for Congressional authority.

GAI President Peter Schweizer discussed the report on Fox Business Network’s “Mornings with Maria” Monday.

At about the 6:30 mark into the interview, host Maria Bartiromo asked Schweizer where bank fines end up, after observing that the DOJ is suing Deutsche Bank for $14 billion.

The GAI president said that most of the fines received aren’t “going to pay the actual victims” of unfair lending practices.

“That money is being steered by the Department of Justice to fund progressive, liberal organizations” to fund political activism, he said.

Furthermore, if the financial institutions agree to help finance these progressive groups directly, the DOJ is “giving them a 10-to-one discount.” Each dollar the bank contributes to the groups “wipes $10 off the slate in terms of what they owe the federal government.”
