Lawmaker defends ‘racist’ BLM photo: ‘Oh, good grief. I’m a cattle feeder. It was a joke’

A Nebraska state senator faces heavy criticism after sharing a Facebook post that compared the Black Lives Matter movement to a cattle herd Friday.

Sen. David Schnoor shared a Facebook photo taken through a car window of Black Angus cows blocking the road, reports the Omaha World Herald.

“Road blocked due to a black lives matter protest in the sandhills,” the photo’s caption read.

Sen. Ernie Chambers accused Schnoor of racism at a legislative hearing about the Nebraska Brand Committee. The committee keeps track of cattle brands, investigates cattle theft and examines the cattle.

“That’s racist and I’m going to deal with it,” Chambers said. He also claimed that the photo was offensive.

“It’s insulting, degrading. And he knows it,” Chambers told the Lincoln Journal Star. “What Schnoor did is not funny to me. But it let me know what he is.”

Schnoor responded by saying it was done in jest and not meant to be offensive.

“Oh, good grief. I’m a cattle feeder. It was a joke. That was it,” Schnoor said. “The people that know me know who I am. I’m a cattle feeder.”

Schnoor and Chambers have a history of disagreements; last year, Chambers said that the police were his form of ISIS. His statement was met with criticism and Schnoor called on him to resign from his position.

Chambers did not apologize for his statement nor did he resign.

Schnoor is up for re-election Nov. 8.
