FBI Director wants a ‘fresh look’ after the election, but Trey Gowdy wants one NOW

During his appearance on Fox Business Network’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” Rep. Trey Gowdy agreed with FBI Director James Comey that the Clinton email scandal deserves a second look — but took issue with the timing.

That second look should happen now, he said.

The South Carolina Republican told host Maria Bartiromo that Comey isn’t alone in caring about the FBI’s reputation.

“The FBI belongs to all of us,” he said. “We have to have confidence in the bureau the morning after the election, the morning after the inauguration.”

Comey said he’d be open to taking a fresh look “after the politics,”

“I want to take a fresh look now,” Gowdy emphasized.

He said there were several problems with the FBI’s first assessment that he found troubling.

“[Comey] added an element to the offense that doesn’t exist,” Gowdy told Bartiromo.

“So I disagree with his analysis of the statute, but even if he’s right, he’s still wrong with the conclusion that he reached.”

Bartiromo asked the congressman if he believed Comey’s boss, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, placed any pressure on the FBI director to reach the conclusion that he did.

“You know, Maria, the fact that you have to ask that question kind of proves my point,” Gowdy observed.

“The next questions need to be directed to Loretta Lynch and her quote, ‘career prosecutors’ about the immunity agreements [given to key witnesses] and what element they thought was missing.”

Gowdy added that he’s aware that the public is frustrated with Congress doing little or nothing on the Clinton investigation, but reminded viewers that “no one in the legislative branch can convene a grand jury, indict anyone, prosecute anyone, sentence anyone,” he said.

“All of that is done by the executive branch,” Gowdy said, the branch which is headed by the president of the United States.
