MSNBC host Chris Hayes came under fire for a comment about how “lucky” it was that the suspect in this weekend’s bombings used explosives rather than guns.
In the wake of the bombings in New York City and New Jersey, followed by the capture of the alleged attacker, Hayes issued a social media comment on Twitter.
We’re also very very lucky that the attackers tried to use explosives rather than guns.

Hayes was immediately slammed by Twitter users, including those in the media.
Dumb Tweet of the day. https://t.co/27UTeUigWr
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) September 19, 2016
Dear terrorists, could you use just bombs from here on? Chris Hayes would really appreciate that. https://t.co/3fFdUdiXjm

@chrislhayes Lucky building. pic.twitter.com/Gj29yCJVNJ

I’m thinking of a movie starring Jim Carrey & Jeff Daniels as it pertains to Hayes/Stein on this one. In a related story, gun w/gun ended it https://t.co/AaQbTltDTN

Hayes gave himself a pat on the back for dealing with the critics.
It’s not even noon and I’ve resisted getting into, like, five arguments on twitter already. Feeling pretty good.
— Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) September 19, 2016
But National Review editor Charles C. W. Cooke did not let Hayes off the hook that easily.
@chrislhayes It’s good to resist getting into arguments after you’ve said something stupid.
— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) September 19, 2016
Hayes debated with others as well.
@Johnny_Joey and it seems pretty clear that had he just opened fire at that intersection we’d be dealing with a lot more fatalities.
— Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) September 19, 2016
@chrislhayes did it ever cross your mind that the actor/intent/motive/inspiration is infinitely more deadly than weapon used?
— Johnny (Joey) Jones (@Johnny_Joey) September 19, 2016
@Johnny_Joey I really wasn’t trying to make some grand point about guns, just the string of lucky breaks that meant no one died. that’s all
— Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) September 19, 2016
@chrislhayes @Johnny_Joey Ya kinda were @chrislhayes and it did come across that way. #Tacky
— Michael Tammero (@FOXlightMichael) September 19, 2016
Cooke and Hayes then fired a series of tweets at each other as the backlash continued.

@chrislhayes You’re making a general case that guns are more deadly than bombs. That’s extremely silly.
— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) September 20, 2016
@chrislhayes Also silly: Pointing to a failed bombing attempt to make the case that your hypothetical gun attack would be more deadly.
— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) September 20, 2016
@chrislhayes But as I say, I understand that it’s annoying that this story isn’t about what you want it to be about.
— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) September 20, 2016
@charlescwcooke thank you for reading my mine, Charles. I’m just happy no one died. Call me crazy!
— Christopher Hayes (@chrislhayes) September 20, 2016
@chrislhayes Uh huh.
— Charles C. W. Cooke (@charlescwcooke) September 20, 2016
@charlescwcooke I’m happy no one died. <fin>
