Multiple victims in deadly mall stabbing in St. Cloud, Minnesota: Suspect wore security uniform, referenced Allah

Saturday night a St. Paul, Minnesota mall became a huge crime scene that left at least eight injured and the suspect dead. The Crossroads Mall will remain closed throughout Sunday as police sift through the premises for clues.

“At approximately 8 p.m., an armed suspect entered the Crossroads Mall,” St. Cloud Police Chief Blair Anderson said, according to local ABC affiliate KSTP 5 News. “That individual made some references to Allah and we confirmed that he asked at least one person if they were Muslim before assaulting them.”

The suspect, who was armed with a knife, was shot by an off-duty law enforcement officer from another jurisdiction.

Victims were taken for treatment at an area hospital.

“Right now we don’t have any information that would indicate that anyone else is involved,” said Anderson.

Authorities told reporters that the suspect, who has come to their attention for minor infractions in the past, was wearing a private security uniform when he began his stabbing spree.

Witness Ashley Bayne, who was visiting a friend at J.C. Penny when the incident began.

“Everyone was frantic and screaming,” she told KSTP. “I ran out as fast as I could,” and nade it to the parking lot before the mall was locked down.

Isle, Minnesota residents Harley Exsted and his wife Tama were in St. Cloud for their son’s a college golf tournament and were in the mall when the stabbings happened.

“All of a sudden I heard pop pop pop,” Harley Exsted told the St. Cloud Times. “I thought someone tipped over a shelf. All of a sudden these people started running. I just saw everybody running our way.”

“It has hit home for us. But I want everybody in St. Cloud to know that we will be diligent and we will get to the bottom of this,” Anderson said.
