Hillary Clinton made it abundantly clear that she didn’t want the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police when she became only the second presidential candidate – the other being John Kerry in 2004 – to refuse to fill out and return their questionnaire.
And now, the nation’s largest police union has formally endorsed Clinton’s opponent, Donald J. Trump, for the office of President of the United States.
Trump has long positioned himself as a “law and order candidate,” and this endorsement only cements that perception. To win it, Trump needed to fill out the questionnaire and win a two-thirds majority of the union’s national board.
But the Republican nominee did far more than that, meeting with FOP top officials at Trump Tower in May and making stops at local union chapters on the campaign trail. In August, Trump told a North Carolina Chapter, “I’m on your side 1,000 percent. What you do is incredible.”
On the other hand, Hillary Clinton didn’t even lift a symbolic finger in the direction of law enforcement, and this clearly agitated FOP officials.
In its press release, FOP national president Chuck Canterbury wrote, “Obviously this is an unusual election. We have a candidate who declined to seek an endorsement and a candidate without any record as an elected official. Mr. Trump, however, has seriously looked at the issues facing law enforcement today. He understands and supports our priorities and our members believe he will make America safe again. He’s made a real commitment to America’s law enforcement and we’re proud to make a commitment to him and his campaign by endorsing his candidacy today.”
