‘What is Aleppo?’ Gary Johnson sees political future flash before his eyes with jaw-dropping question

He may not recover from this.

When Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee, was asked about the Syrian city that is at the hub of the refugee crisis, he was totally flummoxed.

During his appearance Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Mike Barnicle asked Johnson what he would do about Aleppo.

What is Aleppo?” Johnson, a former governor of New Mexico asked.

“You’re kidding me,” a stunned Barnicle shot back, who then told Johnson about the city.

“OK, got it, got it,” Johnson interrupted. He added: “With regard to Syria I do think it’s a mess. I think that the only way that we deal with Syria is to join hands with Russia to diplomatically bring that at an end.”

“It’s just a mess,” he said.

Afterwards, the “Morning Joe” panel discussed Johnson’s response.

“It is staggering that somebody would run for president of the United States, get 14 percent, 15 percent in polls and be so ignorant about foreign policy that they would ask the question, ‘What is Aleppo?’ on national television,” co-host Joe Scarborough said.

The other panel members were equally stunned.

Most of the reaction on social media was that Johnson was an unqualified idiot.

But there were a few who thought it a “gotcha” question.

And there were those who observed that the Libertarian Party — and its presidential nominee — favors the decriminalization of marijuana.
