Czech police detained a man Thursday who tried to run over police in an apparent attack German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Merkel was on her way from the airport to central Prague when a black 4×4 Mercedes tried to join Merkel’s motorcade. Police spokesman Josef Bocan said the man refused to obey orders, and didn’t stop until after police threatened to open fire.
“The perpetrator has been detained,” police spokesman Josef Bocan said, according to Russia Today. “He is suspected of attempting to cause a crime – specifically an attempt to use violence against an official.”
Bocan told Bloomberg that no guns were found in the suspect’s car, but that he was in possession of other “items.” Merkel safely made it into the city for her scheduled meetings with Czech officials.
The Czech Republic has been one of the countries most opposed to Merkel’s open-border policies. People protested her arrival in Prague by chanting “Merkel Muss Weg” — German for “Merkel must go” — on the side of the streets.
