Obama’s blatant Olympic snub seems so… Obama-like

President Barack Obama announced that neither he nor Vice President Joe Biden will attend the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, although he was specifically invited to do so.

But it’s not out of fear of contracting the Zika virus. But it could be that he won’t attend out of spite toward the International Olympic Committee.

Ever since the Olympic Committee snubbed him during his first year in office, Obama has had little to do with the international games.

In 2009, the president dropped what he was doing and flew to Copenhagen to launch a personal campaign to have Chicago — his adopted hometown — be the host city of the 2016 summer games.

He thought it’d be cake walk for him. After all, campaigning is the one thing he’s good at and everybody loves him. right?

Not this time.

The International Olympic Committee turned him down flat, and even eliminated Chicago in its first round of voting. The IOC gave Rio the honors of hosting the 2016 games.

And ever since that failed campaign, Obama — who purports to be a dedicated and knowledgable sports fan — hasn’t attended a single Olympic ceremony, game or event.

“Perhaps that experience explains why Obama is not attending the London 2012 games,” wrote Olivia Waxman for Time magazine. “First Lady Michelle Obama is going in his stead.”

And that probably goes double for this year’s events — after all, they should have been held in the president’s beloved Windy City, with Obama holding court like a royal personage.

Instead of going to Rio, the Obama family will be vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard, as usual.

The last time a sitting U.S. president attended the games was in 2008 when George W. Bush cheered the American athletes as they entered and paraded around the stadium in Beijing.

At that time, then-Sen. Obama denounced Bush’s decision to attend due to what he saw as lack of progress between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama.

But what he failed to realize was that the games aren’t about politics. They’re about nations coming together in the spirit of competition and sportsmanship.

Obama may not know that, but what he does know is revenge — politics and revenge — those are the leading songs in his repertoire.
