After thanking the convention-goers, Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke brought the house down and everyone to their feet with his first words: “Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to make something very clear: Blue lives matter in America!”
America’s killing fields, leaving three officers dead in Baton Rouge and five in Dallas, were clearly on the mind of the no-nonsense law enforcement officer as he continued his approximate seven-and-a-half minute-address.
“But there’s some good news, out of Baltimore, Maryland,” he noted. “As Lieutenant Brian Rice was acquitted of all charges in the malicious prosecution of activist State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby” in the Freddie Gray murder case.
Rice was the fourth defendant to be tried in that case; all four have been acquitted.
Playing off Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, Clarke expressed the need to “make America safe again” in reference to the recent murders of law enforcement officers, calling it a “prerequisite for achieving this campaign’s goal of making America great again.”
Speaking of the rule of law, he said that “what we witnessed in Ferguson, in Baltimore and Baton Rouge is a collapse of a social order … I call it anarchy.”
He stressed that both he and Trump supports the notion that no one — no matter what their social, economic or political status — “can claim privilege above the law,” with an obvious reference to Hillary Clinton.
“It cannot happen in the United States,” he said.
