An alleged recording of police audio claims to have captured the moments before Philando Castile and his girlfriend Diamond Reynolds were stopped by a Minnesota police officer, questioning Reynolds account of what happened.
Reynolds claimed, in the video she took of Castile as he laid dying, that they were pulled over for a broken tail light. However, the audio recording makes no mention of that.
“I’m going to stop a car,” the officer is heard saying on the recording obtained by KARE. “I’m going to check IDs. I have reason to pull it over.”
The reason, apparently, was the two occupants matched the description of suspects wanted for an armed robbery.
“The two occupants just look like people that were involved in a robbery,” the officer said in the recording.
“The driver looks more like one of our suspects, just ‘cause of the wide-set nose,” the officer added.
According to KARE the robbery the officer might have been referencing was one that occurred at a Super USA store in which cash and Newport cigarettes were stolen.
KARE has not been able to verify the authenticity of the audio recording but was able to verify that the license plate number read by the officer in the recording was a match for the car Castile was driving.
The description of the suspect, according to Lillie News, was “a black man with shoulder-length dreadlocks, who wore tan pants, tan shoes with white soles, a green jacket, a green baseball cap and glasses, the release says. He also had some of his hair pulled into a bun through the strap on the back of his hat and had a small mustache and facial hair on his chin.”
Now let’s take a look at social media pictures of Castile.
There’s the shoulder length dreadlocks, small mustache and facial hair on his chin which was specified in the suspect’s description.
Here is a picture of the armed robbery suspect.
The resemblance, of course, does not mean Castile is the armed robber, but it does give an insight as to why the officer believed he had a reason to pull him over.
Also, Castile’s gun was visible on his lap according to some radio traffic reports, Fox News reported.
That matches a statement from the officer’s attorney, which said the policeman shot Castile because of “the presence of and display of a gun, not race.”
Although it has been trumpeted on social media that Castile had a concealed carry permit, no evidence of such a permit has been produced.
Moreover, Fox News pointed out on Saturday, his girlfriend’s story has continued to change.
