The White House is feeling the pressure.
Incensed at the idea that President Obama would have to answer to the Republican-led committee investigating the Benghazi attack that killed four Americans, the White House is pushing back – hard.
Deputy press secretary Eric Schultz said photographs of Obama receiving a press briefing the night of the attack is proof enough the president did all he could. Schultz accused Republicans of conducting a tireless effort based on “conspiracy theories.”
“Republicans have been investigating this exhaustively, and with each turn of the crank, they are unable to prove to the wild conspiracy theories they have been proffering for years,” Schulz told reporters, according to The Hill.
“So it’s not surprising to me that Republicans want to look at every possible crevice for a new conspiracy,” he added. “Unfortunately, when they do so, they come up with nothing.”
Schultz pointed out the photo that was released four months after the attack, according to the Hill, showing Obama being briefed on the horrific situation is all the GOP should need to bury their heads in the sand.
“I know Republicans don’t want to believe that photo,” Schultz said. “Maybe they think it’s photo-shopped, maybe they think it was faked. But it is 100 percent authentic.”
What is also “authentic” was Obama’s reaction to answer to the Benghazi committee. In a more-than-testy statement a lawyer representing Obama answered the request saying that the President does not have to answer to Congress.
“If the president were to answer your questions, his response would suggest that Congress has the unilateral power to demand answers from the president,” he said.
I guess we are supposed to forget that Congress is made of lawmakers who represent the people. And as much as the president absolutely detests it, he is still accountable to those he is in office to serve.
