Class was in session when Gun Owners of America’s Erich Pratt took CNN’s Carol Costello to school on the issue of firearms and gun violence last week.

Costello cited a government report that 100,000 people are wounded by gunshots each year, which resulted in 33,000 deaths in 2013.

Although she admitted that those deaths included suicides, she failed to disclose that suicides amounted to 2/3rds of that number, according to the Centers for Disease control and Prevention report.

After citing the figures, Costello asked, “Isn’t that too many?”

“Well, what you failed to point out, Carol, is that the CDC also — pursuant to President Obama issuing a decree to have them study this issue — they found that anywhere from 500,000 to 3 million times a year guns are being used for self-defense.”

“I just want to point out the facts,” Costello interrupted. “I don’t know what study you’re citing.”

When Pratt said that he was using the same CDC study Costello was, the CNN host claimed that the CDC isn’t allowed to do gun research.

Pratt countered that President Obama ordered the CDC to do precisely that in January of 2013 in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting the previous month.

He noted that even the far-left publication Slate reported on the CDC’s findings:

Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million per year.

“The president since then has seemed to ignore that CDC study,” Pratt said. “How ironic. He wants more research, etc. But when the research was done, it actually found that guns were saving more lives than were being taken by them.”

Game, set, match.
