A top Pentagon official was arrested for a peculiar crime.
No, not espionage or theft of government documents. Bryan Whitman, 58, the principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs, was arrested for stealing license plates in a dispute over a parking space, NBC News reported.
Police visited Whitman about a month after the license plates on his neighbor’s nanny’s car were stolen for a third time.
The theft came two days after a note was left on the nanny’s car that read “I know you are misusing this visitor pass to park here daily. If you do not stop I will report it, have your car towed and the resident who provided this to you will have his privileges taken away.”
The plates were stolen twice before the nanny’s employer installed a surveillance camera to catch the culprit, and it did when it captured Whitman crouching behind the nanny’s car several times before getting in his car and driving off, the Washington Post reported.
According to the Post, when Whitman was served with a search warrant on May 2, he handed the plates to the police.
Whitman reached a deal with prosecutors that will result in the theft charges being dropped if he pays $1,000 in restitution, does 32 hours of community service, stays away from the neighbor’s and their nanny and stays out of trouble for 10 months.
