Obama didn’t just sign an executive order banning assault weapons, but here’s why some think he did

Recently many Americans woke up to learn that President Obama had signed an order outlawing so-called “assault weapons” by signing an Executive Order (EO) to that effect. But, don’t be fooled. This “news” was first “reported” by a satire website and it just didn’t happen. Obama issued no such order.

As we discover from a website named The New Civil Rights Movement, the faux news emanated from a satire site that attempts to fool people into thinking they are reading stories from ABC News.

We here at Bizpac Review won’t link to the satire site as we don’t want to give it traffic, but suffice to say it tries to fool readers into thinking it is ABC News even going so far as to recreate the ABC logo but making it just a tad bit more of an oval instead of a circle to fool people. The site even misappropriates the Associated Press signal at the beginning of stories to make people think they are reading something from the one-hundred-fifty-year-old wire service.

Regardless, the fake story claims Obama signed an EO outlawing “assault rifles.”

Here is how this fake story reads:

WASHINGTON D.C. (AP) — After Sunday’s mass shooting in Orlando, which left 50 Americans dead and 53 wounded, President Obama decided to take unilateral action on gun control by signing Executive Order 13691. The new law bans all sales of assault weapons and places a mandatory 30 day waiting period on all firearm sales, regardless of whether the transaction takes place at a gun dealership or gun show. The requirement also extends to private sales and requires all private firearm sellers to broker the sale through a federally licensed gun dealer. The order requires prospective gun buyers to undergo a psychological evaluation. Individuals who have been committed involuntarily to a mental health institution at any time; those who have been voluntarily committed with the past 5 years; anyone with a domestic violence restraining order, regardless of criminal history; and anyone who has been placed on the no-fly list or terrorist watch list at any time within the past 10 years will not be allowed to purchase or possess firearms.

President Obama was unapologetic in his speech regarding the Executive Order.

This is all fictitious.

In fact, despite that President Obama has lawlessly deployed EOs during his entire presidency, this sort of action is a move too far even for him. Neither Obama nor any other president would have the power to do this.

The actions outlined in this false story would simply have to be put in place by an act of Congress and even then it would likely get overturned by the Courts. Further more, an action such as this would trample all over state laws and state powers–not that Obama cares much about state’s rights. Still, these sort of extreme actions are simply out of the purview of a mere president.

So, don’t get fooled, America. As much as he’d love to do it, Obama has not signed any such order to ban “assault rifles.”
