The White House seized on comments made by Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan to label Donald Trump a racist.

On Tuesday, when speaking with reporters, Ryan disavowed Trump’s assertion that the judge in his Trump University civil trial has not been fair to him and that his Mexican heritage might be to blame for it.

“I regret those comments he made,” Ryan said. “It’s absolutely unacceptable.”

Shortly thereafter White House spokesman Josh Earnest used those remarks to say that Ryan called the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a racist.

“Republicans — wrapped up their nomination process early,” Earnest said. “Apparently it was early enough to allow the Republican Speaker of the House to basically call the Republican presidential nominee a racist.”

Conservative author and commentator Ann Coulter was among those who smashed Ryan for taking the swipe.
