Last week Glenn Beck made news once again, but this time it was for something he claims he didn’t even do.
He was suspended from his own satellite radio show by the SiriusXM network for a week. The network says it was because he and his guest issued an assassination threat to Donald Trump, but in a new interview, Beck says there was something else entirely going on.
In a wide-ranging interview with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, Beck said the suspension came as a result of “internal politics” instead of any assassination threats he and his guest, author Brad Thor, may have made. In fact, Beck insisted that no one inside Sirius was even upset at the on-air comments at first.
“There was really no outrage. It was internal politics that really brought this to the forefront,” Beck told Kelly on “The Kelly File” Monday night.
Beck went on to insist that no one was advocating violence.
“What was in my mind was, who is going to be that ‘Jimmy Stewart’ who will stand alone, because without Congress, they’re not gonna do it. So who’s gonna stand there and rally the people?”
The radio talker was referring to the 1939 movie “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” starring Jimmy Stewart. The movie featured a regular American going to Washington and turning the capital city on its ear with his everyman wisdom and all-American ideals as he fought political corruption and acted for the common man.
The whole controversy stared at the end of May when Beck was interviewing author Thor on his SiriusXM radio show and the discussion turned to the possibility that the country would elect Donald Trump as president. Thor, it appeared, worried Trump could become a “dictator” and began wondering aloud how we as a nation could “remove” him if he did become a dictator.
Many felt that Thor’s solution to such a dire situation entailed assassinating Trump.
“I am about to suggest something very bad….” Thor said on Beck’s program. “With the feckless, spineless Congress we have, who will stand in the way of Donald Trump overstepping his constitutional authority as President? If Congress won’t remove him from office, what patriot will step up and do that? … I don’t think there is a legal means available. I think it will be a terrible, terrible position the American people will be in to get Trump out of office, because you won’t be able to do it through Congress.”
Sirius acted quickly to suspend Beck’s show insisting that Beck and Thor were talking about assassinating a President Trump. The company said the on-air remarks “may be reasonably construed by some to have been advocating harm against an individual currently running for office. Which SiriusXM as a company cannot and will not condone”
The network continued saying, “For that reason, the Glenn Beck program is suspended from the Patriot Channel for the coming week and are evaluating its place in our lineup going forward.”
Beck alluded to his position on the matter only days after his suspension when he Tweeted his thanks for commentator Erick Erickson’s support. He also posted a link to a Facebook post issued by his general manager Dom Theodaore.
For his part, author Brad Thor has subtly changed his story on his comments several times, Breitbart News pointed out. In the end he says he wasn’t talking about assassination but, rather, an impeachment trial of some kind or, perhaps, we might find a strong “patriot” in the public to stand up and oppose such a dictator.
