British journalist Piers Morgan used the UCLA shooting to call attention to gun control but ended up making himself a target.

The former CNN host opened the door to criticism after a post on Twitter about the tragedy at UCLA on Wednesday when a gunman shot and killed a professor before turning the gun on himself.

“GUNS IN AMERICA..” the caption said. “He was angry over his grades, so he took a machine gun to campus & shot dead his teacher.”

Twitter users were quick to point out one glaring error to Morgan, who is currently Daily Mail’s U.S. editor-at-large.

Conservative television and radio host Dana Loesch, apparently no fan of Morgan’s, let him have it.

But Morgan only made things worse by responding, and setting off even more backlash.

Others joined Loesch in calling out Morgan’s claims.

Eventually, National Review correspondent Kevin Williamson issued Morgan a challenge.
