British journalist Piers Morgan used the UCLA shooting to call attention to gun control but ended up making himself a target.
The former CNN host opened the door to criticism after a post on Twitter about the tragedy at UCLA on Wednesday when a gunman shot and killed a professor before turning the gun on himself.
GUNS IN AMERICA..
He was angry over his grades, so he took a machine gun to campus & shot dead his teacher. https://t.co/KWoMB0fiQJ— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) June 2, 2016
“GUNS IN AMERICA..” the caption said. “He was angry over his grades, so he took a machine gun to campus & shot dead his teacher.”
Twitter users were quick to point out one glaring error to Morgan, who is currently Daily Mail’s U.S. editor-at-large.
@piersmorgan c’mon Piers you know very well that it wasn’t a machine gun. You chose that word for an added punch.
— JR (@jrg0569) June 2, 2016
@piersmorgan A machine gun? Really? Police reported a 9mm SEMI-AUTO pistol! What’s YOUR source, Piers? I call bullshit on this.
— Joe Alletto (@FormerGIJoe) June 2, 2016
@piersmorgan Oh stop! You’ve done this enough. It wasn’t a machine gun. You’re just deliberately being a demagogue.
— Keep It Real (@JusDaFacks) June 2, 2016
Conservative television and radio host Dana Loesch, apparently no fan of Morgan’s, let him have it.
For crying out loud. He didn’t have a “machine gun.” It was a 9mm. https://t.co/SFERPMJPxA https://t.co/Boa3MiDak5
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) June 2, 2016
But Morgan only made things worse by responding, and setting off even more backlash.
Ah, so it can only fire up to 200 rounds a minute?
How silly of me, changes everything!
https://t.co/NsBx1N5JPQ— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) June 2, 2016
He fired three rounds. What are you even talking about. https://t.co/hK8dKYM4mc
— Dana Loesch (@DLoesch) June 2, 2016
I love how American gun nuts make such a distinction between automatic & semi-automatic guns.
Both can kill 200+ people a minute.— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) June 2, 2016
Translated: “I hate being called out on my lack of knowledge regarding American law and basic firearm education.” https://t.co/5PYxLC90KZ

Others joined Loesch in calling out Morgan’s claims.
@piersmorgan What semi-automatic gun has a 200 round magazine? Who can fire this imaginary gun over 3 times a second, let alone accurately?
— Dom/Trev Jnr. (@LeTillerman) June 2, 2016
.@DLoesch @libertyjibbet I definitely want to see the badass who can squeeze a trigger 200 times a minute @piersmorgan
— Kyle Becker (@kylenabecker) June 2, 2016
Eventually, National Review correspondent Kevin Williamson issued Morgan a challenge.
Hey, @piersmorgan, I have a wager for you on your ridiculous 200-kills claim. Do you have the courage of your convictions?
— Kevin D. Williamson (@KevinNR) June 2, 2016
How about we bet on this Piers? Pick your shooter and see if he can hit 201 moving targets in 60 seconds. Say $100K? https://t.co/fzwtxFMneK
