A trailer for an upcoming Disney film has sparked speculation and rumors about a first in the company’s animation history.

Sharp-eyed fans who viewed the trailer for Disney Pixar’s “Finding Dory,” the sequel to the 2003 “Finding Nemo,” caught a glimpse of a couple whom many believed to be lesbians.

Though Disney has not commented on the scene or the animated characters seen briefly in the trailer, social media users set off a flurry of rumors and excited responses.

Some fans suggested that Ellen DeGeneres, the voice of the character Dory, was behind the possible first by Disney. The actress and comedian, who has been married to Portia de Rossi since 2008, came out in 1997.

Social media fans of Disney had been rallying recently on the Twitter campaign, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, to reveal that Elsa, from the 2013 film “Frozen,” is a lesbian.

Though many quickly spread the idea of a lesbian couple in “Finding Dory,” which opens in theaters on June 17, there were others on social media who did not share their enthusiasm.
