A television news anchor in Texas fired back at critical viewers with a sarcastic social media post.
Houston’s ABC 13 anchor, Mayra Moreno, annoyed some people when she greeted viewers in Spanish on Memorial Day. Though her “Buenos Dias” on the morning broadcast earned criticism from some viewers, Moreno was not apologetic, posting a comment and photo on Facebook and Twitter.
Apparently I upset some folks because I said #BuenosDías at 9am Oops #SorryNotSorry I won’t be ashamed of my culture pic.twitter.com/ZTG7u26WDx

Her Facebook post included the caption:
“#Oops Apparently this morning I upset some people after I greeted our viewers with a simple #BuenosDías after my coanchor wished everyone a #GoodMorning. Some decided it was uncalled for and unAmerican especially on #MemorialWeekend when we are supposed to honor those who died serving our country. Didn’t realize that this day and age a simple 2 word phrase would upset some people. #WeAreAllAmerican #LetsStopTheHate #HispanicsAlsoDiedForAmerica”
Moreno’s cultural pride is quite evident as her Twitter bio says she is a “Latina blessed to be a TV anchor/reporter in her hometown.” The ABC 13 website page for the anchor notes that “Mayra loves being involved in the Hispanic community.”
Though some were critical of her on-air greeting and subsequent social media posts, many responded with overwhelming support.

@ABC13Mayra Check your priorities – Are you American or not? If you want to be Mexican, move to Mexico and be with your fellow racists.

@ABC13Mayra and in Houston? I’m glad you don’t let them get to you! I’d say keep doing it unapologetically.
