In response to a rumor that a Christian man had an affair with a Muslim woman, a mob of armed Muslims punished the man’s 70-year-old mother, also a Christian.
And they did it in the most humiliating way imaginable — they stripped her and paraded her naked body throughout the streets, according the New York Daily News.
The assault took place on Friday, May 20, in the Minya province village of Karma, located south of the capital city of Cairo. The woman waited five days to report the incident to the police because it was too difficult to “swallow the humiliation.”
The Daily News reported:
Police have arrested six men suspected of taking part in the violence and are looking for 12 more, the security officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi called for the culprits to be held accountable and gave the military a month to restore property damaged during the violence, at no cost to the owners.
Egypt appreciates the role of “glorious Egyptian women,” el-Sisi said in a statement, adding that “the rights and the protection of their dignity are a humanitarian and patriotic commitment before being a legal and constitutional one.”
According to Anba Makarios, Minya’s top Christian cleric, the mob dragged the woman out of her home and beat and humiliated her before disrobing and parading her the village.
In addition to attacking the elderly woman, the mob burned and looted the homes of other Christians while chanting, “We must drive the infidels out,” according to Attiyah Ayad, a 58-year-old farmer who was both a witness and a victim of the onslaught.
“They emptied magazine after magazine, firing in the air to terrorize us,” Ayad said. He was hit in the head by a rifle butt and his 30-year-old son was deeply cut by a knife in his left shoulder.
After the attack became public, the hashtag #EgyptStrippedNaked began trending on social media.
