A Southern California heroin and meth addict is facing a string of charges, including animal cruelty. He got his small dog high on drugs.

Police officers found Joshua West, 40, in his Tustin Key Inn & Suites motel room, along with his terrier mix Bubba and used needles and drugs, according to CBS Los Angeles.

They arrested him on an outstanding warrant, as well as possession of heroin and methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and parole violation.

But it was getting the dog high that left everyone puzzled.

“This strikes me as pretty horrible,” Tustin police Lt. Robert Wright told the station. “This is the first time we’ve ever heard of someone reporting that an animal has been under the influence.”

When animal control officers arrived on the scene, they noticed Bubba was lethargic and ran tests on the dog. It had both heroin and meth in its system.

They expect the dog to recover, at which point it will be placed for adoption.
