Seattle businessman Chris Hansen wants to bring back professional basketball but believes a new sports arena is needed to convince the NBA to buy into an expansion proposal — the Seattle SuperSonics left for Oklahoma City in 2008 to become the Thunder.
The City Council, which includes a socialist, held a key vote earlier this month on a land-use deal that would have paved the way for the new arena, but shot it down in a 5-4 vote, the Seattle Times reported.
Turns out, the vote broke down by gender lines with the five voting against the deal all being women.
Angry basketball fans responded by going after council members Sally Bagshaw, Debora Juarez, Kshama Sawant, Lisa Herbold and M. Lorena González.
The attacks were so bad, the women penned an op-ed in the Seattle Times denouncing the “misogynistic backlash to our vote.”
“What we did not anticipate was the bombardment of threats, of sexual and other physical violence, hateful language and, in some cases, racist rhetoric and accusations of incompetence rooted in our gender identity.”
Hansen and Mayor Ed Murray — the liberal city has only had one female mayor — also condemned the nasty, gender-based attacks, the Times reported.
“While we may not agree with the council’s vote, misogynistic insults, vile comments and threats are unacceptable and need to stop,” Hansen said in a statement.
Samantha Lee documented some of the attacks on her new show on TBS, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee.”
Bee did a segment on the trolls who attacked the five city councilwomen, complete with an introduction of a female basketball team called the “Seattle Seawards” — a play on the “c-word.”
“Ports before sports!” she said. “Because those big, throbbing civic pride hard-ons that stadiums give a city are typically used by taxpayers to screw themselves.”
