A Chilean man jumped naked into a lion’s den in an attempted suicide but managed to survive.

Sadly the lions, who mauled him as he wanted them to, were killed in order to save him.

The man, Franco Luis Ferrada Roman is in grave condition, the Daily Mail reported.

He  stripped off his clothes and jumped into the lion’s enclosure on Saturday.

Once inside the lions began “playing” with him until zoo officials intervened and shot the lions dead, according to the Daily Mail.

“We believe that this person entered as a visitor and paid for his ticket,” zoo director Alejandra Montalva said.

“Later he trespassed into an area where the public are not normally allowed and we understand that he forced the roof of the lion’s enclosure,” she said.

“It was from there that he jumped, took off his clothes and started to attract the lions.”

She told local media that she was “deeply affected” by the deaths of the two adult lions, one male and one female.

The zoo has an established protocol because people’s lives are very important to us,” she said.

Montalva told reporters there were no quick acting tranquilizers available at the time of the incident.

Many on social media were outraged that the lions were killed because of the selfish act of one man.
