FBI Director James Comey has a theory on what’s causing the latest deadly surge in urban street violence – officers are afraid of getting caught on film and becoming famous for all the wrong reasons. Taking a page from Hillary Clinton’s Benghazi playbook, Comey even has a cute name for it – the “viral video effect.” (As a “fix” for the problem, should we look for Comey to call for the arrest and prosecution of anyone filming cops?)

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, however, has a different take. In an interview with Greta Van Susteren at a National Mall vigil to honor fallen officers, Clarke was asked for his perspective on the violence surge. While insisting that cops aren’t afraid to do their jobs, Clarke said they ARE afraid of an entirely different effect, the “cop-hating United States Department of Justice, led by a race-obsessed attorney general.”

Clarke continued, “The President of the United States has been leading the chorus in slandering and maligning the character and the integrity and the service and the sacrifice of our nation’s law enforcement officers. What officers fear is some witch hunt, this ongoing witch hunt by the civil rights division taking over law enforcement agencies all across the nation. I think they’re up to 21 now that have consent decrees where they move in and federalize that agency. And then they’re looking to snag some law enforcement officer for some minor transgression.”

Officers have typically viewed the DOJ as an ally who also wants real justice, but Clarke says the DOJ now “sees the cop as the enemy and the criminal as the victim. This whole thing is flipped around, but that’s what the fear is.”
