Both Bush Presidents declined to support him. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan wants to wait and see. But former Vice-President Dick Cheney just became one of the most prominent members of the Republican “establishment” to come out and publicly support Donald Trump for President.
On Friday, Cheney told CNN’s Jamie Gangel that he always supports the Republican nominee and he will continue to do so this year. That fact that what would typically be a “yawner” in any other Presidential race – a Republican former high-ranking official coming out in support of his party’s nominee – is actually big news speaks to the divisiveness of this primary season and just how far the presumptive nominee has to go to unify the party.
This definitely seems like a step in the right direction.
Interestingly, Cheney’s endorsement could be a double-edged sword. One the one hand, the former Vice-President’s support could lend a certain credibility in establishment circles, much like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s early endorsement told others essentially the “water is fine” during the primary season. On the other hand, one of the main appeals of the Trump campaign to many has always been that “outsider status” and the fact that party “insiders” hated him.
No worries though. We’ll always have Lindsey Graham to fall back on. Â
When CNN’s Dana Bash told South Carolina Senator and former Presidential candidate about Cheney’s endorsement, a surprised Graham said, “Dick Cheney’s a great man. We see the world a lot alike when it comes to foreign policy. I can understand when people want to support the nominee of the Republican Party. I would like to be able to do that, but I just can’t. Maybe I’m the outlier here. Probably am.”
Now, if Lindsey Graham ever comes out and supports Trump, he might have something to worry about!
