London, England has elected its first Muslim mayor to lead Europe’s largest city.
The left-wing Labour Party’s Sadiq Khan defeated conservative Tory candidate Zac Goldsmith by more than a whopping 300,000 votes.
“This election was not without controversy and I’m so proud that Londoners have today chosen hope over fear and unity over division,” Kahn said, taking a shot at what he has claimed was Goldsmith’s use of fear tactics.
“I hope that we will never be offered such a stark choice again. Fear doesn’t make us safer, it only makes us weaker, and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city,” he said, according to the Daily Mail.
It wasn’t just Goldsmith that linked Kahn’s ties Islamic extremism.
During the campaign British Prime Minister David Cameron raised concerns as well, the Daily Mail reported.
The concerns stemmed from the fact that Kahn had shared several platforms with an Imam who was described on BBC as a supporter of the Islamic State.
Kahn said he will fight against radicals.
“I know that Muslims have a responsibility to speak up, address this problem head on and to show that it will not be tolerated — and I’ve paid a high price for doing exactly that,” he said.
